Apple has introduced the iPhone 16e, a cost-effective addition to its product lineup, designed to bring advanced technology within reach of a wider audience. On Wednesday, Apple unveiled its inaugural custom-designed modem chip, enabling iPhones to connect to wireless data networks. This strategic development reduces the company’s dependence on Qualcomm chips, which also support Android competitors.
Apple introduces a groundbreaking collection of components known as the C1 subsystem, integrating key elements like processors and memory. The upcoming iPhone 16e, equipped with the A18 processor like its counterparts in the iPhone 16 series, boasts superior battery life for its 6.1-inch models, thanks to the C1 system, reports Kaiann Drance, Apple’s VP of iPhone product marketing. Additionally, the iPhone 16e incorporates Apple’s cutting-edge AI features.
Creating modem chips presents a challenge due to the need for compatibility with a multitude of carriers worldwide. Only a few companies, including Samsung Electronics, MediaTek, and Huawei Technologies, have successfully developed such chips.
Historically, Apple relied on Qualcomm for modems, the leading supplier of these chips that also powers Android devices and Windows laptops. Despite a lengthy legal dispute, Apple settled with Qualcomm in 2019, securing new supply agreements after alternatives like Intel failed to meet expectations.
Now, Apple is confident in its advanced chip design, poised to serve as the foundation for a new modem platform for years to come.
The C1 subsystem represents Apple’s most sophisticated technology yet, featuring a baseband modem crafted with cutting-edge 4-nanometer technology and a 7-nanometer transceiver, as shared by Johny Srouji, Apple’s SVP of hardware technologies, during an interview at Apple’s silicon labs in Sunnyvale, California. Extensive testing with 180 carriers across 55 countries ensures the chips’ global functionality.
“This is the beginning of a platform for generations,” Srouji remarked. “C1 marks the start, and we’ll continue to enhance this technology each generation to differentiate our products.”
Apple aims for the C1 to set its iPhones apart through seamless integration with processor chips. For instance, in congested data scenarios, the processor can prioritize time-sensitive data through the modem, enhancing the phone’s responsiveness, explained Arun Mathias, Apple’s VP for wireless software.
The C1 chips also feature custom GPS systems and satellite connectivity for users beyond cellular networks. However, they currently lack millimeter-wave 5G network capability, a stronghold of Qualcomm. Apple has not disclosed when it will incorporate this technology or when it plans to phase out Qualcomm’s chips entirely.
Qualcomm foresees its share of Apple modems dropping to as low as 20% by next year, despite a licensing agreement with Apple through at least 2027. Following Apple’s announcement, Qualcomm shares rose by about 1%, while Apple shares remained stable.
